Inspired by the incredible rope webs of Charlie’s Webs, my boi Lyosha and I decided to try making our own rope web for a tiny festival on the outskirts of Moscow. After an afternoon of work, we had a decent five-pointed web that could hold 10 people. Since we had the hardware from my bike synthesizer project with us, we decided to hook up its gyroscope to the web in order to sonify people’s movements and make it an interactive installation. So the web movements were picked up by the gyroscope, streamed as OSC messages over WiFi with an ESP32, and then used to trigger and modulate various sounds in VCV Rack. Here’s the result:
We also added projections above the web that react to movement for a maximally immersive festival viewing experience for the flies that we trapped in our web.
